a biscuit recipe for southern usa style biscuits
i live in the southern usa, and my partner system found this recipe and has made it several times and they taste delicious. if you want to try southern biscuits but don't live in a place where they're accessible use this recipe
here is a link to the original recipe but i'll also be writing it down here just in case the link ever goes dead! also i'll be including metric units which are not included in the basic recipe (original recipe uses US units): link to recipe
ingredients:
i used this calculator to convert to metric
- 2 cups of all purpose flour (99.3 grams)
- 1 tablespoon of baking powder (11.2 grams)
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt (2.5 grams)
- 1/2 cup shortening (can also substitute very cold butter, and i used the butter value on the calculator website i was using to figure out the metric values bc they didn't have shortening) (114.7 grams)
- 3/4 cup of cold milk (177.5 mililiters)
instructions
- preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C)
- mix the dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, and salt)
- "cut in" shortening or butter, whichever you're using, with a fork or pastry cutter until you have coarse crumbs
- pour milk in while stirring with a fork
- keep stirring until the dough is soft, moist, and pulls away from the sides of the bowl
- lightly flour a surface (a plastic cutting board works well for this)
- knead the dough on this surface 5 to 7 times
- roll out dough into a 1/2 inch (approx 1.3 cm) thick sheet and cut them out with a floured cookie cutter (or mouth of a jar. that works too)
- press together unused dough and repeat rolling and cutting
- bake on an ungreased baking sheet for 10 mins
tada! biscuits!
our partner also made some with old bay and colby jack cheese in them, and they were delicious as well. so, highly recommend that combination
